Interaction of Canard and Singular Hopf Mechanisms in a Neural Model

چکیده
We consider an ordinary differential equation model for neural competition, presented previously in the study of binocular rivalry, which features two adapting populations of neurons interacting through mutual inhibition. This model is known to exhibit a variety of dynamic regimes, including mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs) featuring alternating small and large amplitude oscillations, depending on the value of an input parameter. In this work, we use geometric dynamical systems techniques to study the structure of the model in the singular limit as well as the emergence of MMOs in the perturbed system. In particular, exploiting a normal form calculation allows us to numerically compute a way-in/way-out function, which we use to elucidate the interaction of canard and singular Hopf mechanisms for small amplitude oscillations that occurs as the input parameter approaches a critical value. keywords: neural competition; inhibition; mixed-mode oscillations; canards; singular Hopf bifurcation MSC2010: 34E17, 92C20, 34A26, 34D15, 37G05

In this paper we investigate a biological framework to generate and adapt a motion pattern so that can be energy efficient. In fact, the motion pattern in legged animals and human emerges among interaction between a central pattern generator neural network called CPG and the musculoskeletal system. Here, we model this neuro - musculoskeletal system by means of a leg - like mechanical system cal...
متن کاملMixed-Mode Oscillations Due to a Singular Hopf Bifurcation in a Forest Pest Model
We consider the dynamics of a three-variable model for forest pest proposed by Rinaldi and Muratori (Theor. Popul. Biol. 41:26–43, 1990.) The model divides the tree population into young and old trees, as the pest mainly feeds on the old trees. This gives rise to a three timescale structure where the pest grows on a fast scale, the young trees on an intermediate scale, and the old trees on a sl...
متن کاملAn Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Canard Position on the Aerodynamic Forces of a Fighter Type Configuration Model
An extensive experimental investigation is conducted to study the effect of canard position relative to the fuselage reference line on the aerodynamic forces of a fighter type configuration model. Aerodynamic forces at different flight conditions are measured in a subsonic wind tunnel. The wing and the canard have triquetrous shapes. Experiments are conducted at Reynolds number of 342209 and at...
متن کاملLocal Analysis near a Folded Saddle-Node Singularity
Folded saddle-nodes occur generically in one parameter families of singularly perturbed systems with two slow variables. We show that these folded singularities are the organizing centers for two main delay phenomena in singular perturbation problems: canards and delayed Hopf bifurcations. We combine techniques from geometric singular perturbation theory – the blow-up technique – and from delay...
متن کاملNormal forms of Hopf Singularities: Focus Values Along with some Applications in Physics
This paper aims to introduce the original ideas of normal form theory and bifurcation analysis and control of small amplitude limit cycles in a non-technical terms so that it would be comprehensible to wide ranges of Persian speaking engineers and physicists. The history of normal form goes back to more than one hundreds ago, that is to the original ideas coming from Henry Poincare. This tool p...
